Workpackage I2 : UK Bowling river site Pilot to test on operational end-users conditions solutions for erosion and flooding mitigation based on sediment
To enable the site at Bowling to be developed for housing, flood mitigiation measures and erosion management solutions need to be implemented. The historic entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal and Scottish Lowland canal network has been identifed for a future housing development but the viability of the development is compromised by the current flood risk (pluvial flooding from a culverted burn & through sea level rise from the Clyde Estuary). Through SURICATES it is hoped that techniques utilising sediments will enable the current flood and erosion risk will be addressed. This will also ensure that up to 14000T (contribution to main output: 14000t sediment reused / 14000t raw material saved) of silts are diverted from landfill by SC. This investment will use the results of the three pilot trial sites (cf others Investment WPs in UK) testing several formulation and process for: - bio-engineering with sediment: Production of Engineered Soils by accelerated dewatering to produce a soil product for ground raising or restoration topsoil - Concrete made wirh cement & sediment: Production of revetments or sub-base - Mixing of contaminated sediments with hydraulic binder to allow for future use as riverside revetments to prevent scour or for sub-base to foot/cycle paths. - Sediment as pozzolanic material: Flood bunds – Utilisation of dreged material for the creation of flood bunds/SUDS ponds From those results, best solutions for Bowling site will be implemented & tested (processes, operational organisation, technical performance replication, environmental impacts) at Bowling site. SC will dredge the canal to harvest the sediments required with transport to the site at Bowling and assume supervision and operational task for implementation. IXSANE will support operational task with dehydration equipement tests. UoS will provide scientific support for implementation and monitoring.
Activities
Scottisk canal, with the support of UoS, will work to obtain the authorisation to experiment sediment reuse to secure Bowling site from erosion and flooding for further site development and roll out practices.
Scottish canal, with the support of UoS and IXSANE, will work to manage the implementation of the pilot site using 14000t sediment.
Several solutions based on sediment investigated in SURICATES are planned to be tested to valid replication/roll-out potential.
Project partners will coordinate operators onsite, operate works and get operational feedback linked to implementation works to link with replication condition analyses in workpackage T2 and workpackage Long term effect.
UoS, with the support of ARMINES, Deltares, CIT, BRGM expertise, will monitor the processes occurring in the sediment reuse pilot.
Project partners will: characterise sediment properties for the change in physical and chemical sediment composition; monitor the site impact of the application of sediments and the critical environmental parameters for erosion and flooding.
Ongoing results will be used in workpackage T2 to set up roll-out conditions and initiate workpackage long term affect activities. Final results used for final documents.
