Workpackage I4 : UK trial pilot site for Bowling river site pilot focused on sediment reuse as a pozzolanic material to strength sediments solutions

To enable the site at Bowling to be developed for housing, flood mitigiation measures and erosion management solutions need to be implemented. Through SURICATES it is hoped that techniques utilising sediments will enable the current flood and erosion risk will be addressed.

This investment will allow to set up a trial pilot site using 2000t of sediment (Contribution to main output : 1 new solution / 2 000 t sediment reused / 2000t raw material saved) to test in real conditions lab formulation and processes for sediment reuse as a pozzolanic material to strength sediments solutions.

SC, with the support of UoS and IXSANE, will set up the trial site to develop new knowledge, demonstrate and evaluate sediment reuse as a pozzolanic material to strength sediments solutions for erosion protection and flood risk at a significant scale: up to 400t of sediment per formulation, several pilots possible will be experimented. This pilot implementation trials site will be used to determine suitability of proposed solutions at Bowling development site and give inputs for WPT2 and WPLTE.

To implement the trials, Scottish Canals Contracting Division will dredge the canal to harvest the sediments required. The full scope of the initial trials has still to be confirmed but external contractors and plant will be required as well as Scottish Canals supervisory and operational staff. Site investigation and assessment is required to determine the full extent of the works required to facilitate future. IXSANE will support operational task with dehydration equipement tests. UoS will provide scientific support for implementation and monitoring.

Revision June 2021:

During late 2020 and early 2021 dredged sediment was combined with pozzolanic materials to test the properties of the amended material for substitution of primary materials behind sheet piling used on the canal banks in the construction of footbridge at Stockingfield junction.

Activities

Scottish Canals, with the support of UoS, will select the trial pilot site and prepare the pilot implementation, including needed authorisations linked to this experimentation.

Scottish Canals, with the support of UoS and IXSANE, will work to manage and operate the implementation of the pilot site using 2000t sediment as a pozzolanic material to strength sediments solutions.

Project partners will coordinate operators onsite, operate works (including dredging, sediment preparation and pilot construction) and get operational feedback linked to implementation works to link with replication condition analyses in workpackage T2 and workpackae Long Term.

UoS, with the support of ARMINES, Deltares, CIT, BRGM expertise, will monitor the processes occurring in the sediment reuse pilot.

Project partners will: characterise sediment properties for the change in physical and chemical sediment composition; monitor the site impact of the application of sediments and the critical environmental parameters for erosion and flooding.

Ongoing results will be used in workpackage T2 to set up roll-out conditions and initiate workpakage Long Term effect activities.

Final results used for final documents.
