Workpackage I3 : UK trial pilot site for Bowling river site pilot focused on Bio-engineering with sediment
To enable the site at Bowling to be developed for housing, flood mitigiation measures and erosion management solutions need to be implemented. Through SURICATES it is hoped that techniques utilising sediments will enable the current flood and erosion risk will be addressed. This investment allow to set up a trial pilot site using 2000t of sediment (Contribution to main output: 1 new solution / 2000t sediment reused / 2000t raw material saved) to test in real conditions lab formulation and processes for the Production of Engineered Soils to produce a soil product for ground raising or restoration topsoil. SC, with the support of UoS and IXSANE, will set up the trial site to develop new knowledge, demonstrate and evaluate bio-engeneering innovative reuse solutions for erosion protection and flood risk at a significant scale: up to 400t of sediment per formulation, several pilots possible will be experimented. This pilot implementation trials site will be used to determine suitability of proposed solutions at Bowling development site and give inputs for WPT2 and WPLTE. To implement the trials, SC Contracting Division will dredge the canal to harvest the sediments required. The full scope of the initial trials has still to be confirmed but external contractors and plant will be required as well as Scottish Canals supervisory and operational staff. Site investigation and assessment is required to determine the full extent of the works required to facilitate future. IXSANE will support operational task with dehydration equipement tests. UoS will provide scientific support for implementation and monitoring. Revision June 2021: Sediment from maintenance dredging in the Forth & Clyde Canal in summer 2020 was dewatered, planted and monitored over winter 2020-21. The phyto-conditioned sediment was spread and reused as topsoil in spring 2021 as part of restoration works following installation of a long-distance cycleway on a disused railway line.
Activities
Preparation of the UK trial pilot site for Bowling river site pilot focused on Bio-engineering with sediment
SC, with the support of UoS and IXSANE, will work to manage and operate the implementation of the pilot site using 2000t sediment for bio-engeneering solutions developpment. Project partners will coordinate operators onsite, operate works (including dredging, sediment preparation and pilot construction) and get operational feedback linked to implementation works to link with replication condition analyses in workpackage T2 and workpackage long term effect.
UoS, with the support of ARMINES, Deltares, CIT, BRGM expertise, will monitor the processes occurring in the sediment reuse pilot.
Project partners will:
- characterise sediment properties for the change in physical and chemical sediment composition;
- monitor the site impact of the application of sediments and the critical environmental parameters for erosion and flooding.
Ongoing results will be used inworkpackage T2 to set up roll-out conditions and initiate and workpackage long term effect activities.
Final results used for final documents.
From monitoring activities issued from the 5 investment workpackages, Delares, UoS, ARMINES, CIT, BRGM, UL will evaluate and analyse the replication conditions. Project partners will produce technical documentation to secure sediment reuse end-users, regulatory and political framework on processes to be setted up to develop innovative solutions with sediment for flood risk and erosion manangement. Assesment will be undertaken with on-going results from the pilots and final reports will include final pilots inputs.
